BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton women's basketball team used a strong defensive effort in the second half to limit Lehigh Carbon to just 13 points as the Spartans pulled away for a 79-40 victory on Tuesday evening at the Arthur L. Scott Center.
The Spartans limited the Cougars to a 5 for 34 performance from the field in the final two quarters, forced 32 turnovers for the game and out-rebounded LCCC 64-39 in earning the victory.
Deovion Yates (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East) led Northampton with 16 points, followed by
Alayna Day (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg) and
Briona McClain (Tobyhanna, PA/Pocono Mt. West ) with 14 and
Bryanna Rivera (Reading, PA/Greenfield (MA)) with 12. The Spartans outscored LCCC 46 to 12 in the paint and got 29 points off turnovers.
Anajah Hines (Plainfield, NJ/Corinth Holders (NC)) hauled down a season-high 19 rebounds and
Alayna Day (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg) dished out a team-high 7 assists to lead Northampton.
"We are looking to continue to climb that mountain and get back to where we were before the break," remarked Head Coach
Terrence Bomar, "we need to continue to focus on working together toward our goal of participting in the postseason."
The win moves Northampton to 9-5 overall, 5-1 in Region 19 and 3-0 in the EPAC.
LCCC falls to 1-7 overall, 0-6 in Region 19 and 0-4 in conference play.
The Spartans return to the hardwood on Thursday when they travel to Montgomery County Community College for a 5pm matchup vs. the Mustangs.
