HAZLETON, Pa. - The Northampton women's basketball team opened the 2023-24 campaign with a 69-60 victory over Penn St. - Hazleton on Thursday evening on the PSU campus.
Freshman
Xenia Gillis (Yeadon, PA/Penn Wood) scored 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, while
Zoe Cruz (Stroudsburg, PA/Pocono Mt. East) added 17 points and 5 assists as the 12th ranked Spartans pulled away in the second half after trailing 38-27 at the break.
"Definitely some first game jitters tonight," remarked Head Coach
Terrence Bomar, "we were a little tight and struggled on the offensive end, but I liked our intensity out of the locker room in the second half and the way we battled for 40 minutes."
Shanaiya Ellis (Allentown, PA/William Allen) finished with 10 points,
Anisha Sepulveda (Lancaster, PA/McCaskey) had 13 points and 9 steals and sophomore
Yonique Reynolds (Easton, PA/Wilson) hauled down 12 rebounds.
The win moves Northampton to 1-0, while PSU-Hazleton falls to 0-1.
The Spartans are back in action on Saturday when they host 9th ranked Prince George's Community College (MD) at 1pm.
