BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The 15th ranked Northampton women's basketball team closed out the regular season with an impressive 73-57 victory over Middlesex College on sophomore day at the Arthur L. Scott Center on Saturday afternoon.
The Spartans honored
Alayna Day (Reading, PA/Muhlenburg),
Xion Spence (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg North),
Anajah Hines (Wendell, NC/Corinth Holders),
Deovion Yates (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East),
Aslyn Toledo Rivera (Allentown, PA/William Allen),
Brianna Cooper (Philadelphia, PA/Kensington) and
Bryanna Rivera (Reading, PA/Greenfield (MA)) prior to the contest on Saturday, as the sophomores took the Spartan Center floor for their last regular season contest.
After a tight 1st quarter, the Spartans outscored Middlesex 22-15 in the 2nd stanza, to take a 37-29 lead to the locker room at intermission.
Northampton controlled the second half, outscoring the Colts 36-28, to earn the 16 point victory, despite Middlesex attempting 14 more free throws than than the Spartans. Northampton converted 30 field goals to just 19 for Middlesex, as the Spartans held the Colts to just 29% from the field.
"Very proud of our sophomores, they set the tone today and lead our team to victory," commented Head Coach
Terrence Bomar, "I thought we did a good job executing our offense today and finding the open person, as we recorded assists on 21 of our 30 field goals."
Kania Day (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg South) led the Spartans with 19 points and 11 rebounds and
Shanaiya Ellis (Allentown, PA/William Allen) added 10 to pace the offensive attack.
The win moves Northampton to 17-6 overall and 8-2 in Region 19.
Middlesex finishes the season 13-15 overall and 4-11 in the Region.
The Spartans will now await seeding for the Region 19 tournament, which will be released on February 22nd.
