EDISON, NJ - The Northampton Softball team, which received votes in the latest NJCAA National poll, swept Middlesex College on Thursday afternoon in a Region 19 doubleheader, downing the Colts 10-1 and 6-5, at Monkowski Park.
GAME ONE - Won 10-1
In game one,
Aramie Arroyo (Minersville, PA/Minersville) threw a complete game 4-hitter, allowing 1 run (0 earned) with 6 strikeouts, as the Spartans topped Middlesex 10-1 in 5 innings.
The Spartans opened things up in the top of the 2nd with three consecutive singles and a sacrifice fly to take a 2-0 lead.
The Colts got a run in the bottom of the 3rd off a Northampton error and a single to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Northampton put the game away in the top of the 5th, scoring 8 runs, highlighted by a
Cassandra Schillo (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) triple.
Schillo finished 4 for 4 with 2 RBI,
Jillian Reed (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Institute of Technology (NJ)) was 2 for 3 with a double and 2 runs scored and
Chelsea Melkowits (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township (NJ)) went 2 for 3 with a triple and 3 RBI.
GAME TWO - Won 6-5
In game two the Spartans rallied for a 6-5 victory after trailing 5-3 entering the 7th inning.
Chelsea Melkowits (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township (NJ)) got Northampton on the board first, cracking a solo homerun in the 2nd inning.
Middlesex responded with 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd, on 2 hits and 2 Northampton errors to take a 3-1 advantage.
The Colts added a run in the 3rd to extend their lead to 4-1.
Jillian Reed (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Institute of Technology (NJ)) hit a 2-run homerun in the 5th to cut Northampton's deficit to 4-3.
Middlesex added another run in the 6th, using a hit, a walk and a hit batter to take a 5-3 lead.
Trailing 5-3 entering the top of the 7th, the Spartans rallied for 3 runs behind doubles from
Bridget Pavelko (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame - Green Pond) and
Cassandra Schillo (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) to take a 6-5 lead.
The Colts had the tying run on 3rd base in the bottom of the 7th, but Sierra Klingle ended the game with a strikeout to preserve the victory for Northampton.
Klingle earned the win in the circle, working 7 innings, allowing 8 hits, 5 runs (1 earned) with 1 walk and 6 strikeouts.
Jillian Reed (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Institute of Technology (NJ)) finished 3 for 4 with 3 RBI and
Bridget Pavelko (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame - Green Pond) was 1 for 1 with 2 walks to pace the offense.
The sweep moves Northampton to 13-5 overall and 4-0 in Region 19.
Middlesex falls to 6-12 overall and 4-10 in Region 19.
The Spartans are back in action on Friday when they travel to #3 Brookdale Community College for a Region 19 doubleheader, with game one scheduled for 3:30pm.
