BETHLEHEM, Pa.- The Northampton softball team earned a doubleheader split on Saturday vs. RCSJ-Cumberland, falling 6-0 in game one and rebounding to take game two, 16-9, at Spartan Field.
GAME ONE - Lost 6-0
In game one the Spartans simply could not muster any offense, managing only 2 hits, en route to the shutout loss.
Theresa Luongo (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg (NJ)) took the loss in the circle, working 3.1 innings, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits with 2 strikouts and 2 walks.
Aramie Arroyo (Minersville, PA/Minersville) threw the final 3.2 innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits with 4 K's.
Cassandra Schillo (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) and
Chelsea Melkowits (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township (NJ)) had the only hits for Northampton.
GAME TWO - Won 16-9
After a lackluster offensive performance in game one, the Spartans pounded out 20 hits in game two and secured a 16-9 victory to earn the series split.
A wild 1st inning saw the Dukes plate 4 runs in the top half of the inning, only to have the Spartans double that with 8 runs crossing the plate in the bottom half of the inning.
Reggie Bangcoro (Easton, PA/Easton) had a bases clearing double that scored
Hannah Karc (Wind Gap, PA/Nazareth),
Cassandra Schillo (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) and
Siera Klingle (East Bangor, PA/Bangor) to highlight the inning.
Tied at 9-9 after 4 innings, the Spartans added 3 runs in the 5th, which was jump-started by a double from
Lauren Wehr (East Stroudsburg, PA/Pocono Mt. East). Wehr would eventually score on a single from
Hannah Karc (Wind Gap, PA/Nazareth).
The Spartans added 4 more runs in the 6th to make the final 16-9.
Jillian Reed (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Institute of Technology (NJ)) earned the win with 3.1 innings of work in relief of
Siera Klingle (East Bangor, PA/Bangor). Reed did not allow a run, gave up 2 hits and struck out 4.
Offensively,
Reggie Bangcoro (Easton, PA/Easton) led the Spartans with a 3 for 5 performance, including 3 RBI.
Cassandra Schillo (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) was 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored,
Hannah Karc (Wind Gap, PA/Nazareth) was 3 for 5 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI and
Lauren Wehr (East Stroudsburg, PA/Pocono Mt. East) finished 3 for 4, with 2 doubles, 3 runs scored and 2 RBI.
The split moves Northampton to 14-8 overall and 5-3 in Region 19.
Cumberland is now 12-14 overall and 4-6 in Region play.
The Spartans return to the diamond as Monday as the travel to Camden County College for a Region 19 doubleheader set to start at 3pm.
