BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The 3rd seeded Northampton softball team swept #6 Middlesex College, 15-0, 6-1, on Tuesday afternoon at Spartan Field to advance to the North Atlantic District Championship this weekend at RCSJ-Gloucester.
GAME ONE - Won 15-0
In game one, the Spartans scored 9 runs in the 2nd inning, highlighted by a 2-run homerun from Sierra Klingle.
Northampton added 6 runs in the 4th, as
Chelsea Melkowits (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township (NJ)) got things started with a leadoff single, followed by a walk from
Cassandra Schillo (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) and then a 2-run double from
Lauren Wehr (East Stroudsburg, PA/Pocono Mt. East).
Bailey Goldberg (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg),
Destiny Koppenhaver (Bethlehem, PA/Commonwealth Charter),
Grace Perna (Stewartsville, NJ/Notre Dame - Green Pond) and
Hannah Karc (Wind Gap, PA/Nazareth) all added hits in the 4th, to put the Spartans up 15-0.
Aramie Arroyo (Minersville, PA/Minersville) earned the win, going 4 innings, allowing no run on 3 hits while striking out 11.
Theresa Luongo (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg (NJ)) pitched a scoreless 5th to seal the victory.
Hannah Karc (Wind Gap, PA/Nazareth) finished 2 for 4 with 3 RBI and
Siera Klingle (East Bangor, PA/Bangor) was 1 for 1 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBI.
GAME TWO - Won 6-1
The Spartans clinched their opening round series with a 6-1 victory in game two, winning the best of three series, 2-0.
After Middlesex took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning, the Spartans manufactured 4 runs in the 3rd, on 4 hits and 2 Colt errors.
Chelsea Melkowits (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township (NJ)) put the Spartans up 5-1 with a solo homerun in the 5th and
Jillian Reed (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Institute of Technology (NJ)) added a homerun in the 6th, to make the final 6-1.
Aramie Arroyo (Minersville, PA/Minersville) got the win in relief of
Siera Klingle (East Bangor, PA/Bangor), working 3.2 innings, striking out 4. Klingle went 1.1 innings, allowing 1 runs (0 earned) on 1hit with 2 walks and 2 hit batters.
Theresa Luongo (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg (NJ)) pitched the final 2 innings, holding Middlesex scoreless.
Reed finished 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored, Melkowits was 2 for 3 with 3 RBI and
Reggie Bangcoro (Easton, PA/Easton) added 2 hits for the Spartans.
The series victory advances Northampton (24-10) to the North Atlantic District Championship on Saturday May 13th at #2 RCSJ-Gloucester. The best of three series is set for 12pm and 2:30pm on Saturday, with the "if necessary" game three set for 12pm on Sunday.
The winner of the North Atlantic District Championship advances to the NJCAA Division III World Series in Syracuse, NY.
