BETHLEHEM, Pa. - 15th ranked RCSJ-Gloucester held off #8 Northampton in a battle of Region 19 unbeaten women's programs on Tuesday evening, with the Roadrunners prevailing 68-65 at the Arthur L. Scott Center.
Northampton jumped out to an early 16-4 lead, but the Roadrunners, under veteran Coach Rich Cooper, slowly battled back to cut the margin to to just 3 after the 1st quarter, at 20-17.
The Spartans held a 3-point advantage at halftime, 38-35, but were outscored 15-10 in the 3rd quarter, falling behind 50-48.
A back and forth 4th quarter turned in the last two minutes as the Roadrunners forced two Spartan turnovers, with both leading to field goals, to secure the 3-point victory.
"Very competitive game," remarked Head Coach
Terrence Bomar, "we had our chances, we just didn't execute at crucial junctures of the game and it cost us."
Shanaiya Ellis (Allentown, PA/William Allen) and
Kania Day (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg South) each had 18 points to lead Northampton, while Jonaysia Clark led RCSJ-Gloucester with 20.
Day added 12 rebounds and 4 blocks, while
Yonique Reynolds (Easton, PA/Wilson) had a team-high 14 rebounds.
Zoe Cruz (Stroudsburg, PA/Pocono Mt. East) added 12 for the Spartans.
The loss drops Northampton to 13-5 overall and 7-1 in Region 19.
RCSJ-Gloucester improves to 15-2 overall and 7-0 in Region play.
The Spartans are back in the Spartan Center on Thursday when they host Division II Lackawanna at 5pm.
