CORNING, NY - The Northampton Softball team finished their New York road trip by knocking off #3 Corning Community College on Saturday afternoon, splitting a doubleheader vs. the national runners-up from last season.
GAME ONE - Lost 3-2 (8 innings)
Northampton jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but the Red Barons were able to regroup and tie the game in the bottom of the 5th at 2-2.
Corning scored the game winner in the bottom of the 8th, to earn the extra-innings victory.Â
Kamryn Tokar (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus)Â went 3.1 innings, allowing 1 run on 6 hits in the circle, while
Theresa Luongo (Lopatcong, NJ/Phillipsburg (NJ)) took the hard-luck loss, throwing the final 4.1 innings, scattering 5 hits, allowing 2 runs and striking out 4.Â
Hannah Karc (Wind Gap, PA/Nazareth) had a single and a walk to lead Northampton.Â
GAME TWO - Won 14-5
Corning jumped out early in game two, plating 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st, but the Spartans answered in the 4th with 4 runs and added 10 more runs over the next 3 innings to earn the run-rule shortened 14-5 victory.Â
Theresa Luongo (Lopatcong, NJ/Phillipsburg (NJ)) earned the victory, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing 1 run on 5 hits.Â
Sydney Harper (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) pitched the first 2.2 innings, giving up 4 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits.
Chelsea Melkowits (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township) led the offense with a 3 for 3 performance including 2 doubles and 4 RBI.
Hannah Karc (Wind Gap, PA/Nazareth) went 3 for 5 with 2 RBI and
Morgan Boyd (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg South) was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored.Â
The Spartans improve to 3-3 overall, while Corning moves to 8-10.Â
Northampton is back in action on Tuesday as they open up their Region 19 schedule hosting #6 Brookdale at 3:30pm.Â
