BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The 10th ranked Northampton softball team picked up two wins on Wednesday evening, downing PSU-Hazleton 13-8 and 7-6 (9 innings) at Spartan Field.
GAME ONE - Won 13-8
In game one the Spartans jumped out early, taking an 8-2 lead after 2 innings, en route to the 13-8 victory.
Kamryn Tokar (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) earned the win in the circle, going 3.0 innings, allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits.
Taylor Neumann (York, PA/York Suburban) pitched the final 4.0 innings, scattering 8 hits, giving up 4 runs (1 earned) and striking out 3.
Morgan Boyd (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg South) had a monster day at the plate, finishing 3 for 4 with 2 homeruns, 8 RBI and 3 runs scored.
Morgan Rissmiller (Pen Argyl, PA/Pen Argyl) added a homerun and
Hannah Karc (Wind Gap, PA/Nazareth) was 3 for 5 with 2 runs scored.
GAME TWO - Won 7-6 (9 innings)
In the nightcap, the Nittany Lions and Spartans went to extra innings tied at 2-2. PSU struck first in the top of the 8th, plating 3 runs to take a commanding 5-2 lead. Northampton answered with 3 runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, to send the game to the 9th.
In the 9th, PSU scored a run to retake the lead at 6-5. The Spartans opened the 9th with
Molly Devers (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) on second, as per the international tie breaker rule.
Jenna Geiger (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) then doubled to score Devers and tie the game at 6-6.
Cassandra Schillo (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) then singled to right field, scoring Geiger with the game winner.
"Total team effort," remarked Head Coach Eric Kutteroff, "the girls never gave up, even down 3 in the 8th, they found a way to battle back."
Sydney Harper (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) earned the win with 1.0 inning of work, allowing 1 run. Starter
Theresa Luongo (Lopatcong, NJ/Phillipsburg (NJ)) went 8 innings, allowing 5 runs, striking out 1.
Schillo finished 3 for 5,
Sydney Harper (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI and
Jenna Geiger (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) went 2 for 3 with a run scored.
The sweep pushes the Spartans to 8-4 overall, while PSU-Hazleton falls to 7-11.
The Spartans hit the road on Saturday, traveling to New Jersey to face Bergen Community College at 12pm.
