BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The 7th ranked Northampton softball team snapped a 14-year curse Sunday at Spartan Field, downing 9th ranked Brookdale 2-0 in game two, to end a 24-game losing streak to the Jersey Blues, which dated back to April 3, 2010. The top-10 showdown ended in a split with Brookdale taking game one 4-2 and the Spartans winning the nightcap.
GAME ONE - Lost 4-2
Brookdale scored 2 runs in the top of the 7th to break a 2-2 tie and earn the 4-2 win in game one.
Theresa Luongo (Lopatcong, NJ/Phillipsburg (NJ)) took the loss in relief of starter
Sydney Harper (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth), going 2.0 innings, allowing 2 unearned runs, while scattering 4 hits. Harper went 5.0 innings, allowing 2 runs on 8 hits, striking out 3.
Morgan Boyd (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg South) had the big blast for Northampton, launching a 2-run homerun in the 6th to tie the game at 2-2.
GAME TWO - Won 2-0
Taylor Neumann (York, PA/York Suburban) pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just 4 hits while striking out 6, to earn the win for Northampton.
Cassandra Schillo (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) finished 3 for 3 with 2 doubles and a RBI, while
Chelsea Melkowits (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township) was 1 for 2 with 2 runs scored and a walk.
The split puts Northampton at 16-12 overall and 10-4 in Region 19.
Brookdale moves to 15-14 overall and 11-3 in the Region.
The Spartans are now off until Thursday when they travel to Sussex County Community College for a non-league match-up.
