Sweatte Leads Women's Basketball Past Bergen

PARAMUS, NJ - The Northampton Women's Basketball team rode the hot hand of Layla Sweatte (Allentown, PA/William Allen), as the sophomore guard scored a game high 27 points with 10 rebounds and 4 assists, to lead the Spartans to a big road win on Tuesday night over Bergen, 72-41.

Coming off a tough loss to Passaic CC over the weekend, the Spartans answered with a strong effort out of the gate against the Bulldogs. Sweatte was the headliner with her first double-double of the season, but not to overshadow the third consecutive double-double by freshman center Nia Brown (Bethlehem, PA/Executive Charter). Brown scored 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds while teammate Neoshe Perez (Bath, PA/Executive Charter) scored 9 and collected 6 boards. Forward Joey-Madison Shaul (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) scored 7 points and also brought down 7 rebounds for the well rounded effort.

The Spartans jumped out to a 24-8 lead after the first quarter and extended the lead to 44-21 at half time. Both teams traded blows in the 3rd quarter with the Spartans holding a 56-33 lead going into the final frame. The Spartans outscored the Bulldogs 16-8 in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.

"Very pleased with our effort tonight," explained Spartans Head Coach Carly Gallagher, "Coming off a tough loss over the weekend I felt we came out strong and ready to play right from the start tonight. That is what we needed to see and was happy to see the bounce back effort. Still a few things we need to work on but we are moving in the right direction."

The Spartans improve to 2-1 overall and 2-1 in Region 19.

Bergen slips to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in the Region.

The Spartans continue their early season road trip on Thursday, November 13th when they travel to Sewell, NJ to take on RCSJ-Gloucester at 5pm at the Roadrunner Athletic Center.
