BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton Women's Basketball team put together a convincing effort on Thursday night to upend nationally ranked Montgomery County Community College, 51-37, at the Arthur L. Scott Center.
The Spartans held the visiting Mustangs to 4 points in the first quarter and just 10 points by the end of the first half to take a 19-10 lead into the intermission. Both teams came out with a little more offensive purpose in the second half with the Mustangs outscoring the Spartans 19-16 in the third quarter and cutting into the Spartans lead down to six, 35-29. The Spartans found their rhythm again in the fourth quarter, holding the Mustangs to just 8 points, and pulled away to seal the win over the 15th ranked Mustangs, 51-37.
The Spartans, extending their current winning streak to six in a row, followed the lead of sophomore standout
Layla Sweatte (Allentown, PA/William Allen) and her game-high 21 point effort for the win. Sweatte also grabbed 7 rebounds and dished out 7 assists while shooting 3-4 from the free throw line. Freshman
Abymarie Colon (Easton, PA/Wilson) scored 9 points with 5 rebounds and 3 steals while
Nia Brown (Bethlehem, PA/Executive Charter) scored 7 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Joey-Madison Shaul (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall)Â added 5 points and a team-high 12 boards for the Spartans.
"Great team win tonight," explained Spartans Head Coach
Carly Gallagher, "I thought we got some great minutes from our bench today and felt the ladies fought from the beginning to the end of the game. I couldn't be more proud of them."
The Spartans improve to 8-2 overall and 7-2 in Region 19.
Montgomery slips to 5-3 overall and 5-3 in the Region.
The Spartans are back in action on Saturday, December 13th when they host 5th ranked Onondaga Community College (NY) at 2pm at the Arthur L. Scott Center.
