BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton Women's Basketball team lost a hard fought battle against the 5th ranked Onondaga Community College Lazers, falling just short of the upset win, 64-62, on Saturday afternoon at the Arthur L. Scott Center.
The Spartans, who saw their 6-game win streak snapped, had a last second game winning three-point attempt by
Layla Sweatte (Allentown, PA/William Allen) bounce around the rim and onto the floor as time expired.
"Tough loss today for our team," explained Spartans Head Coach
Carly Gallagher, "Onondaga is a very good team and I was proud of how we battled today from start to finish. We fell behind early and fought back in the second half. We had a chance to win as time expired. That's all we can ask. I am proud of our kids and the effort they gave today."
The Spartans were again led offensively by sophomore guard
Layla Sweatte (Allentown, PA/William Allen) who hit for a game-high 30 points with 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Sweatte was also 6-12 from three-point range.
Nia Brown (Bethlehem, PA/Executive Charter) scored 15 points with 9 rebounds while
Neoshe Perez (Bath, PA/Executive Charter) scored 8 points and grabbed 9 boards.
Abymarie Colon (Easton, PA/Wilson) added 4 points off the bench.
The Spartans fell behind 18-10 after the first quarter and trailed by 11 going into the intermission, 34-23. Northampton came out of the locker room and was able to get some momentum through the third quarter, outscoring the Lazers by two, 15-13, trailing, 47-38, going into the final frame.
With just over two minutes to play, Sweatte connected from three point range to cut the lead down to 62-58.
Nia Brown (Bethlehem, PA/Executive Charter) hit two free throws with 1:28 remaining to bring the Lazers lead down to 64-60, and after a quick defensive stop, Sweatte was able hit a running jumper to make the score, 64-62, with 48 seconds left in the game. The Spartans were able to hold off the Lazers with another defensive stop as time ticked down, and with 5 seconds on the clock, Sweatte was able to take the ball the length of the court and fire off the game winning three-point attempt that rattled out as the buzzer sounded.
Northampton slips to 8-3 overall with the loss.
Onondaga improves to 7-2.
The Spartans are back in action on Tuesday, December 16th when the travel to Philadelphia to take on the Community College of Philadelphia at 5pm at the PE Center (CCP).
