BETHLEHEM, Pa. - In a battle of two of the top-ranked teams in NJCAA Division III softball, the 5th ranked Roadrunners of RCSJ-Gloucester outlasted #8 Northampton, 7-6 in game one and rallied to win game two, 6-5, at Spartan Field on Saturday.
GAME ONE - Lost 7-6
In game one, the Spartans took a 2-0 lead in the 3rd, but watched the Roadrunners recover and take a 7-3 lead entering the 6th. After holding RCSJ-Gloucester scoreless, the Spartans scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th on a
Jenna Geiger (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) homerun, her 2nd of the day, pulling them within 7-6, but they would get no closer.
Geiger would finish 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 4 RBI, while
Morgan Boyd (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg South) and
Molly Devers (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) each went 2 for 5.
Emma Kozy (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) took the loss in the circle, working 5.0 innings, allowing 7 runs (5 earned) on 13 hits.
Taylor Neumann (York, PA/York Suburban) came on in relief, pitching the final 2 innings.
GAME TWO - Lost 6-5
The Spartans led 4-2 entering the 7th, but the Roadrunners were able to score 4 runs to take a 6-4 lead. The Spartans scored 1 run in the bottom of the 7th and then had bases loaded, but could not get the tying run across the plate.
Jenna Geiger (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) was 2 for 4 with a homerun, her 3rd of the day, while
Molly Devers (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) had a double and 2 RBI.
Sydney Harper (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) took the loss in relief of Neumann, working 4.0 innings, allowing 6 runs (3 earned) on 11 hits with 3 strikeouts. Neumann pitched the first 3.0 innings, shutting the Roadrunners out.
Northampton drops to 7-6 overall and 7-4 in Region 19.
RCSJ-Gloucester improves to 15-7 overall and 11-3 in the Region.
The Spartans are scheduled to host NJCAA Division II Salem Community College on Sunday at noon.
