BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton Women's Basketball team extended their win streak to 5 games with a dominating win over the visiting Lions of Community College of Philadelphia, 61-39, on Tuesday evening at the Arthur L. Scott Center.
The victory avenges a 61-51 setback at the hands of the Lions back on December 16th at the Lions Den. The last time the Spartans and Coach Gallagher were on the losing end of a contest.
"Very excited and pleased with the overall effort again tonight," explained Spartans Head Coach
Carly Gallagher, "We knew we were going to be challenged and our kids did a great job of coming out tonight and competing. We were strong and we battled and the result was a nice win. Things are coming together and we will keep riding this momentum that we are starting to build. Proud of our team."
The Spartans and Lions jumped right into an early battle as the Spartans held an 18-16 lead after the first quarter. The Spartans started to find their groove and created some distance in the second quarter and carried a 36-26 lead into halftime. The Spartans took control in the second half, outscoring the Lions 14-4 in the third quarter, and cruised the rest of the way for the double-digit win.
Sophomore
Layla Sweatte (Allentown, PA/William Allen) hit for 30 points with 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Sweatte, who is currently 2nd in the country in scoring at 24.4 ppg, was 4-6 from three point range. Freshman center
Neoshe Perez (Bath, PA/Executive Charter), the EPAC Player of the Week, recorded her 5th consecutive double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds while
Nia Brown (Bethlehem, PA/Executive Charter) chipped in with her third straight double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Joey-Madison Shaul (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall)Â grabbed 9 boards and
Zeriah Hinson (Sharon Hill, PA/Academy Park) continued her strong inside play with 7 rebounds off the bench.
Northampton improves to 13-4 overall and 8-3 in Region 19 with the victory.
The Community College of Philadelphia falls to 9-5 overall and 7-5 in the Region.
The Spartans will enjoy a small break in their schedule as they will wait to get back on the floor next Tuesday, January 27th when they travel to Lincroft, NJ to take on the Brookdale Jersey Blues at 5pm at the Collins Arena.
