BLACKWOOD, NJ - The Northampton women's basketball team used a 4th quarter surge to rally past host Camden County College, 62-56, in the regular season finale for both teams on Tuesday night at the Joseph Papiano Gymnasium.
Northampton fell behind early, 19-11, at the end of the first quarter, and found themselves trailing Camden going into halftime, 29-26. Both teams came out of the locker room swinging in the second half, trading baskets on each end, scoring 17 points apiece through an intense 3rd quarter of basketball that saw Camden still holding on to the lead, 46-43. The Spartans were able to lock down their defense and get the offense going at the right time, outscoring the Cougars, 19-10, in the final frame and zipping past Camden in the 4th quarter to secure the win.
"Another battle tonight and good to get the road win to finish off our regular season," stated Spartans Head Coach
Carly Gallagher, "We trailed most the game and finally got it going in the fourth quarter to pull away. I was proud of our team. We had back to back road games that could have gone either way for us and it was good to get this win. We have our sights set now on the post season."
Freshman
Nia Brown (Bethlehem, PA/Executive Charter) picked up a double-double to lead the Spartans over the Cougars, scoring 23 points along with 11 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. Brown was also 5-5 from the charity stripe. Sophomore guard
Layla Sweatte (Allentown, PA/William Allen) scored 23 points with 8 rebounds and 6 assists and hit 4 baskets from beyond the arc. Center
Neoshe Perez (Bath, PA/Executive Charter) scored 9 points and grabbed 10 boards and
Joey-Madison Shaul (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) collected 10 rebounds as the Spartans continue to show strong play inside the paint. The Spartans had 55 rebounds as a team in the win.
Northampton ends the regular season with an overall mark of 18-8 and 12-6 in Region 19.
Camden finishes the regular season with overall record of 13-11 and 9-9 in the Region.
Both teams will wait for the Region 19 Basketball Committee to release playoff seeding for the Region 19 tournament slated to begin on Tuesday, February 24th.
