Softball Advances to Region 19 Semifinals

EDISON, NJ - The Northampton softball team kept their season alive by defeating Camden County College, 12-7, on Sunday afternoon in an elimination game to advance to the Region 19 tournament semifinals.

The 3rd seeded Spartans opened the day with a, 10-2, loss to #2 seed Brookdale Community College, and rebounded with an exciting win over Camden in the elimination game, extending their season another day.

The Spartans will play #1 seed RCSJ-Gloucester in the semifinals on Monday at 1pm with the winner advancing to the championship round against the Jersey Blues.

Brookdale defeated RCSJ-Gloucester, 7-5, in the winner's bracket match up to advance to the Region 19 championship.

GAME ONE - vs #2 Brookdale Community College - Lost 10-2 

The Spartans jumped out, 2-0, in the top of the first inning but the #2 Jersey Blues quickly answered and scored 10 runs over the next 4 innings to secure the run rule victory, 10-2.

The Spartans were able to out hit the Jersey Blues with 7 hits but 6 committed errors proved costly.

Kyra Miller (Whitehall, Pa/Whitehall High School) was 2-3 with 1 RBI and Erin Goonan (Mechanicsburg, Pa/Mechanicsburg High School) was 1-2 with a double and an RBI to lead the Spartans offense. Emma Kozy (Emmaus, Pa/Emmaus) was 1-3 with a run scored and Maria Moore (Fogelsville, Pa/Parkland High School) was also 1-3 in the loss. Rylee Sampson (Easton, Pa/Pen Argyl High School) and Maggie Pagotto (Lehighton, Pa/Lehighton) both finished 1-2 at the plate.

Aniah Clavell (Allentown, Pa/Dieruff High School) suffered the loss, firing 3 innings and allowing 3 hits and only 3 earned runs.

GAME TWO - vs #4 Camden County College - Won 12-7

Erin Goonan (Mechanicsburg, Pa/Mechanicsburg High School) led the charge for the Spartans in the comeback elimination game win over the Cougars, going 3-4 with a pair of doubles and 4 RBI.

The Spartans trailed, 3-0, after three full innings, and were able to tie the game, 3-3, in the bottom of the 4th inning. An RBI single by Kyra Miller (Whitehall, Pa/Whitehall High School), followed by an RBI double by Erin Goonan (Mechanicsburg, Pa/Mechanicsburg High School) and an RBI by Maggie Pagotto (Lehighton, Pa/Lehighton) put the Spartans right back in the game.

The Spartans scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning and took a 7-3 lead. The Cougars were able to push 4 runs across in the top of the 6th inning to tie the score again, 7-7.

Northampton was able to score 5 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning for a, 12-7, lead and put the game out of reach and advance the Spartans to the semifinals.

Kyra Miller (Whitehall, Pa/Whitehall High School) was 3-4 with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI and a triple and both Rylee Sampson (Easton, Pa/Pen Argyl High School) and Maria Moore (Fogelsville, Pa/Parkland High School) were 2-4 in the win. Maggie Pagotto (Lehighton, Pa/Lehighton) was 1-4 with 2 RBI.

Emma Kozy (Emmaus, Pa/Emmaus) fired the complete game for the win, scattering 11 hits with 5 strikeouts, improving to (17-5) on the season. Kozy becomes the all-time single season leader in wins as she surpasses the record of 16 wins set by Emily Perruso in 2011.

The Spartans improve to 18-12 overall.

Camden County College ends their season with a record of 17-22.

The Spartans will play #1 seed RCSJ-Gloucester in the semifinals on Monday at 1pm with the winner immediately advancing to the championship round against the Jersey Blues at the Colts Softball Complex.
