BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The NCC softball team earned the #5 seed for the upcoming Regional Tournament by sweeping Bergen Community College on Friday afternoon.
Game one was a pitcher's duel between NCC's
Emily Perruso and Bergen's Jenna Mony, as the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the 5th when
Beth Ronalds scored the game's first run to give NCC a 1-0 lead.
Bergen tied the game at 1-1 with a run in the top of the 7th and then held NCC scoreless in the home half of the inning, sending the game to extra innings.
Utilizing the international tie-breaker rule,
Megan Dougherty started at second base and was bunted over to third by
Gina Falco. Megan Granite then laced a game-winning single to score Dougherty and give the Spartans a 2-1 victory.
In game two, NCC jumped out early to an early 4-1 lead and cruised to a 9-1 victory.
Morgan Neel hit her 8th homerun of the season, Jen Denaro and Jackie Gates were each 2 for 3 and Granite finished 3 for 3 to lead the offense.
Northampton finishes the regular season 15-7 overall and 13-7 in Region XIX, earning the #5 seed for the upcoming Regional Tournament.
The Spartans will travel to Ocean County College on Saturday April 30th to face the 4th seeded Vikings in a best of three series, with two games set for Saturday and the "if necessary" game set for Sunday at noon.
Bergen, which needed at least a split to qualify for the playoffs, finishes 9-11 in Region XIX.
