Offense Struggles as Softball Opens 1-2 at CSM Tournament

LAPLATA, Md. - The Northampton women's softball opened the 2012 season with three games on Saturday at the College of Southern Maryland Tournament, going 1-2 on the day.

In game one, Anne Arundel Community College downed the Spartans 4-0, scoring all four runs in the first inning.  The Spartans could not generate any offense, managing just two doubles from Mel Morekin and Morgan Neel.  Despite throwing a 4-hitter, Morekin (0-1) took the loss on the mound as NCC fell to 0-1 on the season.

In game two, the offense continued to struggle but did manage to scrap together 5 runs in the first inning vs. Dundalk Community College and then hung on for a 5-4 victory.  Emily Perruso had 2 RBI and also earned the victory on the mound, throwing a 5-hitter as NCC evened their record at 1-1.

In the third game of the day the Spartans played outstanding defense, but once again struggled to score runs, falling 1-0 to the College of Southern Maryland.  Mel Morekin (0-2) allowed only 1 run while scattering 7 hits, but NCC failed to generate any run support.  The Spartans did load the bases in the bottom of the 7th, but Julia Weber's line drive was caught to end the threat as NCC fell to 1-2.

The tournament continues Sunday as the pairings will be set based on the round-robin standings from Saturday.
