EDISON, NJ - Despite a 2-0 halftime lead, the NCC men's soccer team fell in double overtime to Middlesex County College on Saturday, 3-2.
The Spartans struck early as sophomore Zach Waslick played a long through ball to
Jose Matute who scored his 3rd goal of the season, giving NCC a quick 1-0 advantage.
NCC went up 2-0 when
Ismael Pino won a ball at midfield and passed through to Matute who found the back of the net for his 4th goal of the year.
Middlesex regrouped at halftime and came out and took control of the match, scoring two goals to tie the game and eventually send it to overtime. In the second overtime period the Colts scored to earn the come from behind victory.
"We let one slip away today," remarked NCC Head Coach Joe Heitczman, "we are still learning how to play and we need to understand the importance of finishing and playing a full 90 minutes. I think we got a little complacent with the 2-0 lead and give Middlesex credit, they never quit."
Middlesex outshot Northampton 16-6, with NCC goaltender
Ronnie Mendizabal recording 13 saves.
NCC falls to 0-2-2 overall and 0-0-2 in Region XIX / EPAC play.
Northampton returns to action on Monday when they travel to Lehigh Carbon Community College to face the Cougars in an EPAC matchup.
Middlesex improves to 4-0-1.
