NEWTOWN, Pa. - The Northampton women's soccer team, fighting for their playoff lives, downed Bucks County Community College 2-1 in overtime on Thursday afternoon to improve to 5-5-1 with one game remaining.
The Centurions jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 20 seconds into the contest. Â
Abby Dempsey (Bangor, PA /Faith Christian ) tied the game 23 minutes later with shot to the upper 90, from 18 yards out, off a pass from
Shyra Cardwell (Easton, PA /Easton ).
The teams battled through the next 67 minutes of regulation scoreless, before heading to overtime for the second time this season (1-1 tie on September 13th). Dempsey scored the game winner 5:35 into the extra stanza off an assist from
Laura Sarria (Easton, PA /Notre Dame - Green Pond ) for the thrilling 2-1 victory. Â
Melissa Schnappauf (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) had 7 saves in goal to earn the win.Â
The Spartans, need to defeat, or tie, Middlesex County College on Saturday to qualify for the Region XIX playoffs. The game is part of a women's/men's doubleheader, with the women set to start at 12:00pm.Â
Bucks falls to 6-6-1 with the loss.Â
