BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Returning to action 16 hours after opening the season vs. Cayuga Community College, the Northampton Softball team swept Bergen Community College, 14-13 (9) and 15-4 on Saturday afternoon.
Alexis Lobb (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg Sr. High) went 4 for 5 in game one with 2 doubles and added a solo homerun in game two as the Spartans scored 29 runs combined in the doubleheader to open the Region XIX portion of their schedule at 2-0.
GAME ONEThe Spartans led 11-5 entering the top of the 7th, before allowing 8 runs to fall behind 13-11. The Spartans were able to tie the game with 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th and eventually won it in the 9th on a single from
Kailee Dube (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley ).
Sierra Flurer (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth ) was 4 for 5,
Mackenzie Caffrey (Easton, PA /Pleasant Valley) was 3 for 4 with 4 RBI and
Cathryn Cusano (Easton, PA /Easton) was 3 for 5 with 3 runs scored to pace Northampton.
Sierra Flurer (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth ) got the victory in game one, going all 9 innings, striking out 5.
GAME TWOIn game two,
Alexis Lobb (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg Sr. High) hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the 1st inning but Bergen led 4-1 going into the bottom of the 3rd before
Kailee Dube (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley ) drove in
Sierra Flurer (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth ) and
Samantha ZeRuth (Bangor, PA/Bangor ) to cut the margin to 4-3. The Spartans then exploded for 12 runs in the bottom of the 4th to earn the 15-4 run-rule shortened contest.
Cathryn Cusano (Easton, PA /Easton) earned the victory in game two, striking out two.
The Spartans, 2-1-1 overall, are now off until March 31st when they host Lehigh Carbon in a doubleheader starting at 3:30pm.
