EDISON, NJ - The Northampton Softball team saw their 2-game winning streak come to an end as undefeated Middlesex County College swept their Region XIX doubleheader on Thursday afternoon, taking game one 7-5 and game two 5-3.
GAME ONE (Lost 7-5)Samantha ZeRuth (Bangor, PA/Bangor ) opened the scoring for Northampton, tripling and then scoring on a RBI single from
Sierra Flurer (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth ) to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. Middlesex answered with 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st, but Northampton responded with 3 runs in the top of the 2nd, highlighted by a 2-run double from
Alexis Lobb (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg Sr. High).
The Colts scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 2nd to retake the lead at 6-4 and then added a run in the 4th to make it 7-4 entering the 6th inning. Lobb tripled in the 6th and scored to cut the margin to 7-5. The Spartans had runners on 2nd and 3rd in the top of the 7th inning, but failed to score as Middlesex closed out the inning for the 7-5 victory.
Lobb was 3 for 4 with a single, double and triple, while
Mackenzie Caffrey (Easton, PA /Pleasant Valley) was 3 for4 and
Miranda Youngkin (Easton, PA /Easton ) went 2 for 4 to lead the Spartan offense.
GAME TWO (Lost 5-3)Game two proved to be an almost carbon copy of game one, with Northampton stranding runners on second and third in the top of the 7th, trailing by two runs.
Sierra Flurer (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth ) finished 2 for 4 with a double,
Abby Monks (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh ) was 1 for 3 with a RBI and
Mackenzie Caffrey (Easton, PA /Pleasant Valley) went 2 for 4 to pace Northampton. Flurer took the loss, going 6 innings, allowing 5 runs and striking out 1, falling to 5-4 on the year.
The sweep drops Northampton to 7-4-1 overall and 7-3 in Region XIX.
Middlesex improves to 10-0 overall and 8-0 in Region XIX.
The Spartans host RCGC on Saturday at noon.
