BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton softball team came within one out of giving Brookdale their first Region loss of the year, but the Jersey Blues rallied in game one for a 5-4 victory and then took game two 7-1 on Sunday afternoon at Spartan Field.
GAME ONE (Lost 5-4)Trailing 4-3 with two outs in the top of the 7th inning, Brookdale was able to plate 2 runs to take a 5-4 lead and then hold the Spartans scoreless in the bottom the 7th for the come from behind victory.
Alexis Lobb (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg Sr. High) was 2 for 3 with a double, run scored and 2 RBI and
Sierra Flurer (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth ) was 1 or 3 with 2 RBI.
GAME TWO (Lost 7-1)Alexis Lobb (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg Sr. High) was 1 for 3 with a triple and run scored in game two and
Miranda Youngkin (Easton, PA /Easton ) was 3 for 3 with a RBI, while
Kailee Dube (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley ) had double. The Jersey Blues jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the 1st inning, but the Spartans were able to cut the margin to 2-1 after 3 complete innings, but could not plate another run in the 7-1 loss.
Sierra Flurer (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth ) took the loss, striking out 2.
"It's time for us to regroup," stated Head Coach
Scott Cullen, "I thought we played well today, we just made some timely mistakes and Brookdale took advantage of them ... this coming week will be huge for us, we need to regain some confidence and make a push for the postseason."
Northampton, which has now lost 6 straight, falls to 7-8-1 overall and 7-7 in Region XIX.
Brookdale improves to 22-10 overall and 12-0 in Region XIX.
The Spartans host Sussex County Community College on Tuesday at 3:30pm in a Region XIX doubleheader.
