BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Despite slow starts in both games, the Northampton softball team swept a Region XIX doubleheader from Sussex County Community College on Tuesday, winning game one 5-1 and taking game two 10-2.
GAME ONE (Won 5-1)Trailing 1-0 entering the 5th inning, the Spartans tied the game on a bases loaded walk to
Sierra Flurer (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth ) to make it 1-1. Northampton broke the game open in the 6th as
Samantha ZeRuth (Bangor, PA/Bangor ) singled and scored on a single from
Abby Monks (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh ).
Amber Farnholtz (Northampton, PA/Northampton ) singled and then
Amanda DeHart (Easton, PA /Easton ) hit her first homerun of the season, scoring Monks and Farnholtz to make it 5-1. Zeruth finished 2 for 3 with a double, while Monks was 2 or 3 with a RBI. Flurer got the win, going 7 innings striking out 4.
GAME TWO (Won 10-2)The Spartans once again started slow, falling behind 2-0 before rallying with 10 unanswered runs to earn the run-rule shortened contest, 10 to 2. The Spartans got on the board in the second inning when
Amanda DeHart (Easton, PA /Easton ) tripled, scoring
Abby Monks (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh ) to make it 2-1 Sussex. The Spartans added 2 more in the 3rd inning as Zeruth doubled, driving in
Miranda Youngkin (Easton, PA /Easton ) and
Sierra Flurer (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth ). The flood gates opened in the 4th, highlighted by a 2-run double from Flurer (2 for 3, 2 RBI) and a 2-run double from Zeruth (2 for 3, 4 RBI). Flurer got the victory, improving to 7-8 on the season.
Northampton, which had lost 6 straight, improves to 9-8-1 overall and 9-7 in Region XIX.
Sussex falls to 0-16 overall and 0-14 in Region XIX.
The Spartans host NJCAA Division II Lackawanna College on Thursday in doubleheader starting at 3:30pm.
