BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton Softball team earned a split in their regular season finale on Saturday vs. Ocean County College, taking game one 6-5 and dropping game two 6-2. The split moved Northampton into 5th place in the Region, earning them a bid to play 3rd seeded RCGC in a best ot three series starting on Tuesday in Sewell, NJ.
GAME ONE (WON 6-5)
In game one, Northampton jumped out to a quick lead, as
Miranda Youngkin (Easton, PA /Easton ) singled, moved to second on a
Sierra Flurer (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth ) single and then scored on a
Kailee Dube (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley ) single to make it 1-0 after one inning. The Spartans added 2 runs in the 3rd as
Alexis Lobb (Reading, PA/Muhlenberg Sr. High) walked, Youngkin doubled and Flurer singled to drive in two runs, increasing the lead to 3-0. Ocean got on the board with 2 runs in the 4th to cut the margin to 3-2. Dube led off the bottom of the 4th with her 5th homerun of the season to make the score 4-2 entering the 5th inning.
Ocean tied the game in the 6th inning, but Dube homered again in the bottom of the 6th to make it 5-4 heading into the 7th inning. Ocean tied the game in the 7th at 5-5 after a leadoff triple.
Megan Crimi (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame Green Pond) led off the bottom of the 7th with a single, Lobb doubled and Flurer singled home Crimi for the 6-5 victory.
Dube finished 3 for 3 with 3 RBI, Flurer was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and Youngkin finished 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored.
GAME TWO (Lost 6-2)
In game two, the Spartans couldn' t muster any offense until the 7th inning. Trailing 6-0, Sam ZeRuth singled,
Mackenzie Caffrey (Easton, PA /Pleasant Valley) doubled and
Cathryn Cusano (Easton, PA /Easton) doubled to drive in both runs and make the final score 6-2. ZeRuth finished 2 for 3, Caffrey was 2 for 3 and Cusano was 1 for 3 with 2 RBI.
The split puts Norhampton at 12-11-1 overall and 12-8 in Region XIX.
Ocean finishes 23-9 overall and 16-4 in Region XIX.
