SEWELL, NJ - The Northampton Women's Soccer team saw their most successful season in program history come to an end on Saturday, as the Spartans fell to Rowan College @ Gloucester County, 7-0, in the Region XIX playoffs.
The #1 seeded Roadrunners took a 3-0 lead into the halftime break and systematically added 4 more tallies over the final 45 minutes to earn the 7-0 victory and advance to the Region XIX championship game vs. Brookdale on October 29th.
The 8th seeded Spartans, who earned their first-ever playoff berth this season, finish with an overall record of 8-6-1.
"Overall it was a very rewarding season," remarked 4th year head coach
Scott Cullen, who founded the program, "obviously it will always be a case of "what if" when you think about the 2017 season, as we started out 6-0-1 and then lose Abby (Dempsey) to a season-ending injury and finish 2-6-0. Soccer is a team game, so no individual can do it by themselves, you need a well-rounded team ... but Abby's ability to put the ball in the net and her ability to lead on the field were definitely missed over the second half of the season. That being said, I could not be prouder of the girls ... they fought, never gave up and kept working hard all year. They earned a conference championship (co-champs with Bucks), made the Region XIX playoffs for the first time and finished 8-6-1 ... they should be very proud of what they accomplished."
Coach Cullen will lose 11 sophomores from this 2017 squad, as he looks to reload for 2018.
