NEWTON, NJ - The Northampton Softball team ran their winning streak to six games with a doubleheader sweep of Sussex County Community College on Wednesday afternoon at Skylander Park.
GAME ONE - Sussex jumped on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead after 2 innings of play. The Spartans responded with 3 runs in the 3rd, led by an
Erin Happel (Bangor, PA/Bangor ) double. Northampton added 3 more runs in the 4th, highlighted by a double from
Darion Jacoby (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton ), a triple from
Miranda Youngkin (Easton, PA/Easton) and a double off the bat of
Sierra Flurer (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth).
The Spartans added two more runs in the top of the 5th when
Abby Monks (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh ) singled in
Courtney Maffia (Easton, PA/Easton ) and
Sydney Wright (Milford, DE/Sussex Technical (DE)). Sussex closed the gap to 8-6 in the bottom of the 5th, but Northampton was able to put the game out of reach with 4 runs in the 7th, to make the final score 12-6 in game one.
Jacoby finished 3 for 4 with 2 RBI, Monks was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and
Samantha Cordova (Hinsdale, NY/Hinsdale (NY)) finished 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored.
Sierra Flurer (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) got the win, going all 7 innings, allowing 6 runs and striking out 4.
GAME TWO - In the second game, the Spartans got 3 runs in the top of the 2nd as
Darion Jacoby (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton ) laced a 2 run single and
Miranda Youngkin (Easton, PA/Easton) followed that with a RBI single, scoring
Samantha Cordova (Hinsdale, NY/Hinsdale (NY)) to give Northampton a 3-0 lead. Sussex responded with 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd to make it 3-2.
The score remained 3-2 until the 6th, when Jacoby doubled, stole third and then scored off a single from Youngkin to make it 4-2. The Spartans added two insurance runs in the top of the 7th and pitcher
Erin Happel (Bangor, PA/Bangor ) closed the door on the Skylanders, finishing with 7 strikeouts, as the Spartans prevailed 6-2.
Jacoby finished 3 for 4 with 2 RBI, Youngkin was 3 for 5 with 2 RBI and
Courtney Maffia (Easton, PA/Easton ) was 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored.
The sweep pushes Northampton to 9-11 overall and 4-4 in Region XIX. Sussex falls to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in Region XIX. Northampton improves to 19-4 all time vs. Sussex.
The Spartans are back at again on Thursday when they host the Mustangs of Montgomery County Community College, with the first pitch scheduled for 4pm.
