SCRANTON, Pa. - The Northampton softball team dropped an EPAC doubleheader on Monday afternoon at Lackawanna College, falling 8-0 in game one and 10-9 in the nightcap.
In game one, Lackawanna opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st, added 6 runs in the 4th and 1 in the 5th to earn the run-rule shortened 8-0 victory.
Erin Happel (Bangor, PA/Bangor ) took the loss, going 5 innings, allowing 7 runs and striking out one.
Abby Monks (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh ) and Happel were each 1 for 2 to pace the offense.
In game two, the Spartans came out with 4 runs in the top of the 1st and added a run in the top of the 5th to take a 5-1 lead going into the bottom half of the inning. The Falcons exploded for 6 runs in the bottom of the 5th to take a 7-5 lead, but the Spartans responded with 4 runs in the 6th as
Samantha Santucci (Springfield, NJ/J. Dayton High (NJ)) laced a bases clearing double, scoring
Abby Monks (New Tripoli, PA/Northwestern Lehigh ),
Erin Happel (Bangor, PA/Bangor ) and
Darion Jacoby (Palmerton, PA/Palmerton ).
Sierra Flurer (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) then doubled, scoring Santucci to put Northampton up 9-7. Lackawanna then plated 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th to take a 10-9 advantage and then shutout the Spartans in the top of the 7th for the thrilling come-back victory.
Erin Happel (Bangor, PA/Bangor ) was 3 for 4, Santucci was 2 for 4 with 3 RBI,
Courtney Maffia (Easton, PA/Easton ) was 3 for 4 with a RBI and Jacoby finished 2 for 4 to lead Northampton. Flurer took the loss in the circle.
Northampton falls to 11-15 overall, 6-6 in Region XIX and 2-2 in the EPAC.
Lackawanna improves to 12-11 overall, 1-7 in Region XIX (Division II) and 4-0 in conference play.
Northampton is now off until Thursday when they travel to Lehigh Carbon Community College to face the Cougars at 3:30pm.
