PLATTSBURGH, NY -
Abby Dempsey (Bangor, PA/Faith Christian ) scored both goals to lead the Northampton women's soccer team to a season-opening 2-0 victory over Clinton Community College on Friday night at Plattsburgh State College.
Dempsey, a sophomore, got the Spartans on the board at the 28 minute mark of the first half off an assist from
Mikayla Garzillo (Bangor, PA/Bangor). Dempsey then added her 2nd goal with 7 minutes remaining in the first half on a feed from
Amanda Sroka (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth). The two goals give Dempsey 17 for her career, putting her only 6 behind all-time leader
Laura Sarria (Easton, PA /Notre Dame - Green Pond ), who finished her career with 23.
"We moved the ball well and controlled the middle of the field," commented Head Coach
Scott Cullen, "I thought Sam (Borrell) and Mikayla (Garzillo) did a great job in the midfield winning 50/50 balls and controlling the action."
Melissa Schnappauf (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) recorded 2 saves in goal to earn the shutout, as Northampton moved to 1-0-0 on the season.
The Spartans have Saturday off before returning to action on Sunday at North County Community College. Game time is set for 12:00pm.
