SCHNECKSVILLE, Pa. - Freshman
Kelsie Smith (Bangor, PA/Bangor) scored what proved to be the game winner with just under 15 minutes to play to lead the Northampton Women's Soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Lehigh Carbon Community College on Tuesday afternoon at Cougar Field.
Smith found the back of the net after
Jessica Trout (Bangor, PA/Faith Christian ) served the ball into the box to
Amanda Sroka (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth), who found Smith for the goal. "The girls worked hard for this one," remarked Head Coach
Scott Cullen, "give LCCC credit, they pushed us today, but we were able to step up and find a way to win."
The Cougars took an early 1-0 lead and clung to that advantage at halftime.Â
The Spartans evened things up 4 minutes into the second half when
Mikayla Garzillo (Bangor, PA/Bangor) converted a penalty kick.Â
The teams played even over the next 30 minutes, before Smith was able to break the tie.Â
Northampton outshot LCCC, 18 to 8, with Spartan goaltender
Melissa Schnappauf (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) making 7 saves.Â
The Spartans improve to 7-2-1 overall, 4-2-1 in Region XIX and 4-0-0 in the EPAC.Â
Lehigh Carbon falls to 2-5-0 overall, 1-5-0 in Region XIX and 2-2 in the EPAC.
Northampton returns to action on Thursday when they host Montgomery County Community College at 3:30pm.Â
