BLUE BELL, Pa. - How quickly things can change ...
Abdallah Ferdjani (Algeria/El Macir) scored what appeared to be the game tying goal with less than one minute remaining in the contest on Wednesday afternoon vs. Montgomery County Community College, but it was called back by an offside call, giving the Mustangs a thrilling 3-2 victory and sending the Spartans to defeat.
The Spartans, who lost earlier in the season to Montgomery, 7-3, took an early 1-0 lead on a
Matthew Doyle-Sochan (East Stroudsburg, PA/Duncan U. Fletcher High (FL)) goal with an assist from
Kevin Acosta (Easton, PA/Easton).
The Spartans held the 1-0 lead throughout the half, until right before intermission when the Mustangs converted a penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1.
The Mustangs scored two quick goals in the second half to take a 3-1 advantage, but the Spartans battled back, with
Andrew Seymour (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) finding the back of the net off a beautiful pass from
Kevin Acosta (Easton, PA/Easton), cutting the margin to 3-2 with 10 minutes remaining.
The Spartans continued to push, leading to the apparent tying goal by Ferdjani, which was called back. "I can't say enough about these guys," remarked Head Coach
Mario Barrantes, "they battled all day and fought for 90 minutes ... I was disappointed in our effort last game, but today I couldn't be happier with how hard the guys played."
The loss drops Northampton out of playoff contention at 4-8-0 overall and 4-7-0 in Region XIX.
The Spartans will close out the regular season on Tuesday October 16th when they host Delaware County (5-3-2) at 3:30pm.
Montgomery improves to 7-4-0 overall.
