BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Freshman
Hannah Seltzer (Reading, PA/Schuylkill Valley) scored 3 goals to help lead the Northampton women's soccer team to a 6-3 victory over Cumberland County College on Tuesday afternoon in their season opener.
The Spartans led 3-0 at halftime, but the Dukes battled back to make it 3-2 early in the second half, but the Northampton was able to find the net late in the second half and put the contest away.
Head Coach
Erik Daly couldn't have asked for more from his freshmen class in his debut as Spartans head coach, as newcomers accounted for all 6 goals and 3 assists, "I was really impressed with the girls today," commented Daly, who led the men's program to a 30-6-0 record back in 2008 and 2009, "we only have one returner from last season, so the freshmen have to grow up quickly and be a big part of our plans if we are going to achieve our goals."
Freshman goalkeeper
Montana Cassaro (Bangor, PA/Bangor) made 9 saves in the win, with two coming at point blank range, "Montana really played well today," remarked Daly, "she is going to be a big-time keeper in this Region."
Hailey Jordan (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) added 2 goals and an assist, while
Aliyah Flora (Bethlehem, PA/Nazareth) recorded a goal and an assist and
Christine Farrell (Morrisville, PA/Pennsbury) notched an assist to round out the scoring for Northampton.
Northampton, now 1-0-0 overall, will travel to Lehigh Carbon Community College on Thursday to face the Cougars at 3:30pm.
Cumberland falls to 0-1-0 with the loss.
