BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The NCC Spartans men's soccer claimed the 2009 Pennsylvania Collegiate Athletic Association (PCAA) state championship in convincing fashion on Saturday afternoon, defeating Harrrisburg Area Community College, 5-2.
The Spartans were determined to claim the title, after falling 1-0 last season in the championship game, "The guys were hungry," stated Head Coach Erik Daly, "I knew they were ready to play when they came in the locker room today."
Seth Dempsey put the Spartans on the board 10 minutes into the game and Dan Pereira gave Northampton a 2-0 lead with his goal at the 20 minute mark.
The Hawks cut the lead to 2-1 with 13 minutes remaining in the first half, but
Julio Isidoro scored back-to-back goals three minutes apart and
Hunter Missenheim added the dagger with nine remaining before half to give the Spartans a commanding 5-1 lead at the break.
The second-half was evenly played, with Harrisburg getting a late goal with about ten minutes remaining in the contest.
"I am very happy for the guys, especially the sophomores," remarked Daly, who improved his career record at NCC to 30-6-0 during his two seasons, "they set the tone as leaders and worked hard all season to achieve their goal."
Patrick Szarzynski notched 8 saves to earn the victory in goal as the Spartans claimed the program's first state title since 2006.
Northampton, in their final year of EPCC and PCAA competition, ends the season with a 14-5-0 record. The Spartans will compete next season in Region XIX of the National Junior College Athletic Association.
