Men's Soccer Routs Lehigh Carbon, Clinches Playoff Berth

SCHNECKSVILLE, Pa. - The Northampton men's soccer team clinched a playoff berth and set a school record for goals in a game with a 12-0 victory over Lehigh Carbon Community College on Wednesday at Cougar Field.

Joey Jacona (East Stroudsburg, PA /East Stroudsburg South ) and Sam Gaye (Northampton, PA/Northampton ) each scored 3 goals, giving them 15 and 14 goals, respectively, on the season. Hamdi Selmi (Tunisia/Soussa - Tunisia ) had 2 goals, while Baidy Ba (Bethlehem, PA /Freedom ), Cesar Hernandez (East Stroudsburg, PA /Stroudsburg), Robert Bradford (Bethlehem, PA /Northampton ) and Anthony Jampo (LeRaysville, PA /NE Bradford ) each netted a goal.

Ba set a Northampton single-game record with 4 assists, giving him 12 on the season, while Hernandez and Selmi each had 2 assists.

Kenan Meral (Bethlehem, PA /Liberty ) recorded his 4th shutout of the season, making 7 saves.

The victory, which moved Northampton to 7-2-0 overall, guaranteed them their first playoff appearance since 2013, "I'm really happy for the guys," commented Head Coach Brennan McCarthy, "they have worked extremely hard and to earn a playoff spot is very rewarding after a 3-win season last year. That being said, we are happy, but not satisfied, we still have a lot of season ahead of us and many more things to accomplish."

The 12 goals broke the previous record of 11, which had been set on September 17th of this year vs. Lehigh Carbon.

The Spartans host Harrisburg Area Community College on Saturday at noon.
