Box Score UTICA, NY - The Northampton women's basketball team fell to 3rd ranked Mohawk Valley Community College, 68-61, in the championship game of the Torchia Classic on Sunday afternoon at MVCC.
The Spartans jumped out to a 15-12 lead after the 1st quarter and despite a MVCC run, held a slim 27-26 lead at halftime. Northampton opened the 3rd quarter with a 10 to 4 run, led by
Dom Moser (Easton, PA/Easton ) who scored 8 of the 10 points. The Spartans led 46-43 after 3 quarters and were up 53-51 with 5:30 remanining in the game before Mohawk's Gianna Locker knocked down three consecutive 3-pointers to give the Hawks a 60-55 lead that they would not relinquish.
"While it is always disappointing to lose, I am very proud of how we fought today against a top-5 team," commented Head Coach
Tara Belfield, "we played our best basketball of the year on both ends of the court ... it came down to Mohawk making some big plays down the stretch that we couldn't answer."
All Tournament selection
Dom Moser (Easton, PA/Easton ) led the Spartans with 27 points, 4 assists and 4 steals, while
Nakia Rogers (Bushkill, PA/E. Stroudsburg North ) added 11 points and
Deana McKeller (East Stroudsburg, PA/E. Stroudsburg South) pulled down a team-high 9 rebounds. Sophomore
Tytiona Goodwin (Allentown, PA/Dieruff ) was also named to the All-Tournament team.
Northampton, now 2-1 overall, returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Bel Air, MD to face NJCAA Division I Harford Community College at 6pm.
Mohawk Valley improves to 4-0 overall.
