BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Leading 2-0 with just over 42 minutes remaining in the game, the Northampton men's soccer team looked to be in control of the contest and headed toward their 3rd victory of the season.
Andrew Tinna (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock) had just scored his 2nd goal of the game and the Spartans looked to have momentum in their favor as goalkeeper
James D'Amato (Tobyhanna, PA/Pocono Mt. West ) saved a penalty kick to preserve the 2-0 lead ... but momentum can swing quickly in the game of soccer.
The Centurions scored off a rebound off to cut the margin to 2-1 and then tied the contest at 2-2 with 23:19 remaining in the game off a scramble in front of the net.
The teams battled back and forth over the final 22 minutes, but with 1:42 remaining Ilia Borisov found the back of the net to give Bucks the improbable victory. "Overall I thought we played pretty good soccer," remarked Head Coach
Craig Root, "but once the momentum swung in the second half, we struggled a little to regroup ... credit Bucks, they never quit battling."
Tyler Eichelbaum (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth ) and Igor Malaquais each had assists, while Tinna's two goals give him 16 for the season. D'Amato finished with 12 saves, behind a strong defensive effort from
Giancarlo Vera (East Stroudsburg, PA/East Stroudsburg ),
Brody Tucker (Stroudsburg, PA /Notre Dame - East Stroudsburg),
Nick Cygan (Bethlehem, PA /Liberty ) and
Dylan Ottinger (Clinton, NJ/North Hunterdon (NJ)).
The loss drops Northampton to 2-2-1, while Bucks improves to 5-3-0.
The Spartans continue their homestand on Thursday when Sussex County Community College comes to Bethlehem for a 3:30pm contest.
